WHAT IS... LA LECHE LEAGUE
INTERNATIONAL (LLLI)?
LLLI is a
nonprofit organization founded in 1956 by seven women who wanted to help other
mothers breastfeed their babies. The organization has grown into a worldwide
network that currently reaches 300,000 people in 63 countries every month with
breastfeeding information and education. Mother-to-mother support group meetings
are available in many locations for pregnant and nursing mothers and babies.
the LLLI
mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother
support, education, information, and encouragement and to promote a better
understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy
development of the mother and baby.
LA LECHE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL

Is a Non-Governmental
Organization (NGO) in consultative status with the Economic and Social
Council of the United Nations.

Is an NGO
in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Acts as a
registered Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) for the United States Agency
for International Development (USAID).

Is an
accredited member of the US Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition.

Is a member
of the Child Survival Collaborations and Resources Group (CORE).

Is a
founding member of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA).

Was
instrumental in the development of the International Board of Lactation
Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
