Finger Foods to Feed Babies

  • - Cooked vegetable pieces ( cut into strips ).

  • - Dry toast strips, bread sticks, bagel pieces, rice cakes, melba toast, unsalted crackers.

  • - Cooked tender meat cut up finely or ground.

  • - Cooked pasta.

  • - Cooked tofu.

  • - Cooked beans or other legumes.

  • - Strawberries and grapes do not have to be peeled but should be cut into small bite-sized piece to avoid choking.

  • - Soft, ripe, peeled fruit cut into small bite-sized pieces or strips ( for ex. bananas, pears, peaches, plums or kiwi ).

 

Foods to avoid during the First Year

  • - Honey, as it can make a baby sick with botulism, a type of food poisoning.

  • - Hard candies, potatoe chips and chocolate.

  • - Soft drinks, sport drinks, drink crystals.

  • - Tea, coffee, herbal teas.

  • - salt, sugar, pickles.

  • - Diet foods sweetened with sugar substitutes.

  • - Low-fat or calorie reduced foods.

Avoid foods that can cause choking. These should be avoided until your child is at least 5 years old: Solid foods that are hard, smooth or sticky or small such as candies, raisins, gum and whole grapes.Popcorn, nuts and seeds.Fish with bones and snacks using toothpicks or skewers.
